FMCSA Moves Carrier Registration Into Motus
FMCSA has moved carrier registration into Motus, the new USDOT Registration System for DOT numbers, operating authority, biennial updates, and related filings.

Registration Moves To A New System
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has moved motor carrier registration into Motus, its new USDOT Registration System. The agency says the platform is now available for the commercial motor vehicle community after legacy registration functions began yielding to Motus on May 14, 2026.
Motus is meant to centralize the registration lifecycle: new USDOT numbers, operating authority, company information updates, biennial updates, reinstatements, reapplications after revocation, and status tracking. FMCSA is also using Login.gov and identity verification as part of the first-login process.
What Carriers Need To Do
Existing registrants can create or claim a Motus company account by linking it to an existing USDOT record. FMCSA says company officials should use the same Login.gov email they used in the FMCSA Portal when claiming a USDOT number, then review, update, and certify company information inside Motus.
The system also covers supporting companies, including BOC-3 filers, financial responsibility filers, and transportation service providers that handle registration work for carriers, brokers, freight forwarders, intermodal equipment providers, and cargo tank facilities.
Why It Matters For Fleets
Registration systems are not glamorous, but they are operationally important. A missed biennial update, a stale company official record, or trouble claiming an account can slow routine filings and create unnecessary compliance friction. Fleets with multiple entities, operating authorities, or outside registration partners should make sure account ownership and Login.gov access are squared away before the next filing deadline hits.
