National Fleet Services is marking its 30th year in business, putting a spotlight on a part of fleet operations that often determines whether new vehicles actually reach the field on time.
The Michigan-based, family-owned company was founded in 1996 in the Detroit area and provides OEM-authorized upfitting for commercial fleet operators across North America. Automotive Fleet reported that the company supports vehicle modifications, equipment installation, and accessory integration for utilities, telecommunications, government, and service fleets.
More complex vehicle builds
NFS says demand for OEM-authorized upfitting has continued to grow as fleets look for modifications that maintain manufacturer standards while fitting specialized operating needs.
Mike Bedard, director of marketing and customer engagement, pointed to the company's earlier high-volume CNG and LPG conversion work, more recent EV repower projects, and a broader list of OEM-certified Ship-Thru and Ship-To options. NFS also said its upfitting mix now reaches into areas such as Class 8 and prison-service products.
The fleet takeaway
For fleet operators, the milestone matters less as an anniversary and more as a signal about upfit complexity. Work trucks, vans, and specialized vehicles increasingly need shelving, power systems, safety equipment, communications gear, and body modifications before they can produce revenue or support field work.
That makes upfitting capacity part of the replacement-plan conversation. A vehicle that is ordered but waiting on equipment is still downtime, so fleets planning 2027 units should treat ship-through availability, engineering fit, and delivery timing as operating variables, not afterthoughts.
