FedEx Scales a Medium-Duty EV Bet

FedEx has ordered 2,000 all-electric Harbinger trucks in a deal valued at more than $300 million, one of the larger medium-duty EV commitments to hit the North American delivery market.

Harbinger plans to deliver the trucks by the end of 2027. Transport Topics and FreightWaves both reported that FedEx will deploy them across U.S. and Canadian pickup and delivery operations, replacing the same number of internal combustion vehicles.

From Pilot to Production Order

The order deepens a relationship that started before this purchase. FreightWaves reported that FedEx placed an initial 53-truck Harbinger order in November 2025 while co-leading the manufacturer's Series C financing round.

Harbinger told the publications the full 2,000-truck order is planned for delivery in roughly 18 months. The company also said it recently completed its 1,000th vehicle, an important signal for fleet buyers watching whether medium-duty EV startups can move from pilots into repeatable production.

The Operating Math

Harbinger estimates each electric truck can reduce fuel costs by about $20,000 per year compared with the diesel vehicle it replaces. On a 2,000-truck deployment, that would equal roughly $40 million in annual fuel savings, before maintenance, charging infrastructure and utilization assumptions are tested in daily route work.

The company also estimates that replacing 2,000 diesel trucks could avoid more than 1.7 million tons of carbon dioxide over the vehicles' operating lives. Kaizen Automotive Group will support the Canadian side of the deployment.

For fleets outside FedEx, the takeaway is not that every medium-duty route is ready for electrification. It is that larger fleets are now making EV decisions at replacement-program scale, where range, dealer support, uptime and local charging plans matter as much as the headline purchase price.
